YOUNG UNDERLINES HIS CHALLENGE FOR RENAULT UK CLIO CUP WITH VICTORY
Jack Young’s first visit to the short, challenging Knockhill circuit in Scotland this past weekend reminded his rivals in the Renault UK Clio Cup series that his sights are still firmly set on Championship success. Despite the 17 yr old Belfast student’s relative lack of track knowledge he secured a pole position, new lap record and victory to close the gap at the top of the Championship table to just 4 points.
“This is one of the most technical tracks I’ve competed on” said Jack, “but it’s a place where driving aggression and bravery pays off. Anyone who has seen this weekend’s in-car footage can’t fail to see just how hard I was trying. The M.R.M car set-up was perfect from the word go and this gave me the confidence to take those ambitious racing lines!”
Despite the technical challenge of having to start from 6th on the grid in Race 1 Jack rapidly progressed through the field, including one audacious over-taking manoeuver that saw him pass two cars on the approach to the infamous Duffus Dip on Lap 3. He closed to within 0.2 sec of the race lead but unfortunately the event was red-flagged before he could mount his challenge for No. 1 position.
In Race 2 Young started from pole and was never seriously challenged at any stage of the race. He stretched his lead to more than 4 seconds by mid-point before his pit crew advised him to ease his pace to ensure a “lights to flag” triumph. This victory, his fifth of the season, now sets him up for a grandstand finish to the Championship. With 112 points still up for grabs at the final 2 rounds of the Clio Cup series it’s still all to play for.
“My challenge now is to maintain the focus on the Clio Championship. I’m busy preparing for my first taste of the TCR Series in Europe in the new Renault Mégane TCR, which is exciting and a big step-up in competition, but I won’t be taking my eye of the ball in the race to be the Clio Cup Champion either. I’m learning fast and thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to demonstrate the experience I’ve gained.”
Young’s next outing will be at Round 6 of the TCR Europe in Barcelona on September 21st / 22nd September before heading for Silverstone (September 28th/29th) and Brands Hatch (October 12th/13th) for the conclusion of the Renault Clio Cup series.
