The impactful ways we’re supporting our customer Unilever to cut UK logistics emissions

Read it in 3 minutes

Here at Stobart, we’ve spent over 50 years delivering the largest and most efficient multi-modal logistics network in the country.

We continue to strive to become the most sustainable and prosperous haulier in the UK, protecting the environment, our people, our partners and the communities around us.

Sustainability is at the core of our business and as part of our offer, we adopt a true partnership approach with our customers, to help them to deliver their sustainability priorities that drive positive change to reduce environmental impact across the supply chain.

For our customer Unilever, their approach to sustainability is about delivering impact faster with focused, urgent and systemic action. They’ve created the Unilever Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP), with a clear roadmap which focuses on key actions to support their ambition of achieving net zero carbon across their value chain by 2039.

As one of Unilever’s transport partners, helping to deliver approximately 1.5 billion products to stores across the country every year, here are two ways we’re working together to accelerate decarbonisation.

Alternative Fuels: Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO)

Following successful trials in 2023, last year, we made more than one million kilometres of UK deliveries for Unilever using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), a fuel made from renewable, sustainable raw materials. This transition away from diesel saved more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions from entering the atmosphere, with HVO estimated to have CO2e emissions savings of up to 90% versus diesel fuel.

Last Mile Delivery Solutions: Double Deck Trailers

Reducing the number of vehicles on the road is the most impactful way we can help our customer reduce their logistics’ emissions. We’re utilising our double deck trailers which are able to transport up to 40 pallets compared to the traditional 26, with the aim of reducing Unilever’s HGV journeys by 1,500 by mid-2026, approximately a 10% reduction. Alongside this initiative, we’re also trialling the use of longer semi-trailers, which offer a 15% increase in capacity compared to standard trailers.
